YSU offers multiple sections of M1501 Beginning Algebra. There are generally 31 sections offered in fall term, 20 sections in spring term, and 2 sections in summer term. All sections of M1501 are offered in the traditional environment with three lecture days and 2 lab days. The M1501 Master course has been set up so that we could also offer the course within the distance environment if needed.
One M1501 Master is designed as a MyMathLab "coordinator course". The other courses are created from it as "member courses" with teachers assigned as TAs. This allows for course standardization. All homework, lab work, and tests are preset within the Master and administered via the member courses. The Master is designed so that students must do text assignments, lab work in MyMathLab, and tests. All member courses get the same syllabus and grading policy.
Our pass rate went from 35% to 75%-85% depending upon the term. The course [taught with MyMathLab] has significantly improved the success rate of students in the Engineering Tech program.
Fall pass rate is at the lower end, spring at the upper end. I am currently studying the effect this instruction has had on pass rate of the next course a student needs for his/her program. The results are not in yet, but I expect they will be good.
MML features that students use the most are:
All of the above have been implemented within the structure for this course, and I believe that this has added to the success of the course. I find that MyMathLab has produced the results I had hoped for.
